(AP) — In search of a new standard-bearer, evangelicals are looking for a lot more than opposition to gay marriage and abortion.

At an annual meeting of social conservatives, a new wave of Senate Republicans auditioned before prominent conservative activists and faith leaders, deriding President Barack Obama's health care law and his steering of the economy and foreign policy.

Ted Cruz of Texas on Friday described a nation teetering on "the edge of a cliff" while Rand Paul of Kentucky said U.S. foreign policy needed to stop a "war on Christianity." Mike Lee of Utah said the nation's economic problems represented "moral threats" to the stability of families.

"We can't stop talking about the importance of our values and our culture," said Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida. "We can't stop talking about them because the moral well-being of our people is directly linked to their economic well-being."

Social conservatives gathered at the annual Values Voter Summit at a Washington hotel as congressional Republicans sought agreement with Obama on a way to end the government shutdown, now in its 12th day, and avoid an economic default. Few in the audience expressed interest in backing down from efforts to defund or delay Obama's health care law, a primary driver of the impasse, and said they wanted congressional Republicans to bring down the nation's debt.

Marlene Kellett of Columbia, Md., said Republicans needed to hold firm in their opposition to the so-called Obamacare law. But she expressed pessimism that Republicans would make progress.

"I'm very opposed to Obamacare — it's a disaster," Kellett said. "But I'm not feeling very positive about it. So often the Republicans cave and they can't seem to get what they want."

Adrienne Grizzell of Lexington, Ky., said the accumulation of nearly $17 trillion in debt — the source of a debate over whether to raise the nation's borrowing limit — is too often shrugged off. "It's as if, 'No, it's not a problem, let's keep spending,'" she said. "Nobody is saying, 'OK, we've going to start spending less.'"

While social issues touched the hearts and minds here, speaker after speaker stressed pocketbook issues a year after Democrats vilified GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney as being oblivious to the needs of middle-class families during tough economic times.

Cruz, whose speech was interrupted several times by immigration reform advocates, said the health care law and Obama's spending priorities had put the nation on the wrong track. "We have a couple of years to turn this country around or we go off the cliff into oblivion," he said.

Lee said economic issues like a lack of economic opportunity, stagnant wages and spiraling housing costs represented "moral threats to families' stability." Families, he said, "are bearing the brunt of all of these things and as a result too many are falling behind."

Rubio said too many families are struggling to pay for child care and grappling with student loan debts. Paul devoted his remarks to foreign policy, describing attacks on Christianity in the Muslim world.

The list of speakers included former GOP presidential candidates, too: former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

To be certain, gay marriage and abortion got plenty of attention. Dr. Ben Carson, a Maryland physician popular with conservatives, rejected the notion of a "war on women," raised by Democrats, saying, "The war is on their babies." He said marriage was a "sacred institution" that did not need a new definition.

Along the sidelines, conservatives said they were actively seeking a new group of conservatives to rally behind — and made clear that they don't want capitulation.

"We don't have enough Ted Cruzes and Marco Rubios," said Jerry Skirvin, who runs a marketing firm in Lynchburg, Va. "We have too many John McCains and Lindsey Grahams," he said, identifying two GOP senators often accused of seeking conciliation with Democrats.

The search also took place in private. Before the summit, Cruz and Paul sat down for separate closed-door meetings with a group of evangelical leaders, including Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, which sponsored the event, former presidential candidate Gary Bauer and Robert Fischer, a South Dakota businessman. The senators were joined by their wives during the session and discussed their faith and views on issues.

flooring - What tools should I use to remove the tongue and groove ...

First, a disclaimer: Make sure the wood you are going to use will stand up in the environment you're placing them in. You may be better off using these with the T&G on an indoor project. Weather outside will quickly weather non-pressure treated wood, and decks typically require thicker boards than you'd have inside since they don't have a sub-floor.

For long cuts along the length of a board, the best tool is a table saw. And the second best would be a circular saw with a jig. If you don't have plans for more projects like this, or simply need to save space, then the circular saw makes more sense. Setup a jig with a long straight edge that you can run your saw along and clamp it on top of your boards to be cut.

To smooth the edges, a router would be best. You could also use a block plane or sander. I'd be tempted to get a belt sander to make this project go quick and to give me the chance to cleanup the finish on the boards at the same time. A small orbital sander would also work and have other uses around the house, but it would take a lot longer and wouldn't be as useful if you want to cleanup the finish on the boards.

Newsweek sold to IBT Media

By Gil Aegerter, Staff Writer, NBC News

Newsweek is being sold to an online news company, less than a year after it ended publication of its weekly print magazine and went all digital.

IBT Media, which publishes the International Business Times, said it was acquiring Newsweek from IAC, run by Barry Diller. Terms weren?t disclosed.

?"We believe IBT will serve as an excellent new home in which?Newsweek?has the opportunity to thrive," read a memo to employees from Rhonda Murphy, interim CEO of the Newsweek Daily Beast Company.?

Newsweek once had a circulation of 3 million but was in decline when it merged with The Daily Beast in 2010. It ceased print publication on Dec. 31. The deal with IAC is for the Newsweek brand and its online publication, IBT Media said in a statement.

?We respect the brand's long history of delivering high-quality, impactful journalism and believe this aligns well with IBT Media's culture and mission,? Etienne Uzac, co-founder and chief executive officer of IBT Media said in the statement.

IBT Media, which was founded in 2006, said it planned to continue the online publication as a wholly owned subsidiary of IBT Media.

IAC would continue to operate Newsweek for up to 60 days after the deal closes, IBT said. It said Newsweek would return to the URL http://www.newsweek.com.

Lyon President: Gomis To Join Newcastle In Next 48 Hours

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed the club has agreed a fee with Newcastle for Bafetimbi Gomis, and he expects the transfer to take place in the next 48 hours.

'; var $h=$(html);$h.find('.accordian-head').text(title); $ph.before($h); } if(hasEvents){ $ph.find('.unique').removeClass('unique'); var $ah=$ai.find('.accordian-head').click(oc); setActive($ah,window.skybetidx); } } }; var fb_team_bet_callback=function(json){window.skybetjson=json;};

Aulas told French website Journal du Dimanche: "We accepted the proposal of Newcastle, which is 8 million euros, plus 2 million bonus.

"The agreement is now linked to the acceptance of agents' fees. I understand that the problem is in the amount and manner of payment of commissions.

"There are several people involved in the operation, which complicates the negotiations. But I am hopeful that things will be resolved within 24 or 48 hours."

Newcastle are not expected to have any problems agreeing personal terms with Gomis, with some reports in France suggesting Newcastle and the player had an agreement in place three weeks ago.

Gomis, who has played 12 times for?France, has been one of the most consistent players in the French league in recent years, scoring at least 10 goals in each of the last seven seasons.

The United States issued an extraordinary global travel warning to Americans Friday about the threat of an al-Qaida attack and closed down 21 embassies and consulates across the Muslim world for the weekend.

The alert was the first of its kind since an announcement preceding the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This one comes with the scars still fresh from last year's deadly Sept. 11 attack on a U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, and with the Obama administration and Congress determined to prevent any similar breach of an American Embassy or consulate.

"There is a significant threat stream and we're reacting to it," said Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He told ABC News in an interview to be aired Sunday that the threat was "more specific" than previous ones and the "intent is to attack Western, not just U.S. interests."

The State Department warning urged American travelers to take extra precautions overseas, citing potential dangers involved with public transportation systems and other prime sites for tourists and noting that previous terrorist attacks have centered on subway and rail networks as well as airplanes and boats. It suggested travelers sign up for State Department alerts and register with U.S. consulates in the countries they visit.

The statement said that al-Qaida or its allies might target either U.S. government or private American interests. The alert expires on Aug. 31.

The State Department said the potential for terrorism was particularly acute in the Middle East and North Africa, with a possible attack occurring on or coming from the Arabian Peninsula.

U.S. officials pointed specifically to Yemen, the home of al-Qaida's most dangerous offshoot and the network blamed for several notable terrorist plots on the United States, from the foiled Christmas Day 2009 effort to bomb an airliner over Detroit to the explosives-laden parcels intercepted the following year aboard cargo flights.

"Current information suggests that al-Qaida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August," a department statement said.

The alert was posted a day after the U.S. announced it would shut many diplomatic facilities Sunday. Spokeswoman Marie Harf said the department acted out of an "abundance of caution" and that some missions may stay closed for longer than a day. Sunday is a business day in Muslim countries, and the diplomatic offices affected stretch from Mauritania in northwest Africa to Afghanistan.

"I don't know if I can say there was a specific threat," said Rep. Eliot Engel of New York, the House Foreign Affairs Committee's top Democrat, who was briefed on the State Department's decision. "There is concern over the potentiality of violence."
